 Position Information

Type of Contract:     Temporary Appointment (TA)

Supervisor:                  Regional Representative of the Regional Office for Central America

Duration:                      5 months (extension subjected to availability of funds)

This position is located in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Regional Office for Central America, located in Panama City.  The Press and Public Information Officer reports to the Regional Representative of the OHCHR Regional Office for Central America.

 


Under the supervision of the Regional Representative of the OHCHR Regional Office for Central America, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Reply to media enquiries and undertake activities to promote media coverage of priority issues and/or major events (including the development of a media strategy and action plan).
  • Initiate pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences, interviews, seminars, etc., in order to generate media coverage (including disseminating materials and consulting with press on the media approach/story angle and other information requests). Undertake appropriate follow-up action and analyze and report on the impact of coverage.
  • Assist in the production of media information products, including the OHCHR newsletter, press kits, press releases and backgrounders (including proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copies and coordinating design approval, ensuring printing and distribution).
  • Ensure the implementation of information programmes to publicize priority issues and/or major events (including assisting in the drafting of information strategies, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome of the programme).
  • Monitor and analyze current events, public opinion and press, identifying emerging human rights issues and trends in all countries covered by the Regional Office and advising the management on appropriate action/responses.
  • Prepare, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in the OHCHR newsletter and other publications.
  • Initiate and sustain professional relationships with key constituencies.
  • Assist in maintaining the Regional Office website on a daily basis with press releases, statements and relevant information and other material of interest to the media and public.
  • Liaise and maintain close coordination with Communications/PI officers in other field presences in Latin America, NYO and the Communication Section in Geneva.
  • Coordinate public information activities and fulfilling administrative duties in the context of the annual and biannual planning exercises.

 Recruitment Qualifications 

Education:

Master’s Degree or equivalent in Political Science, International Relations, Human Rights, Journalism, or related field.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in journalism, public relations or communications. Experience at the international level and prior experience in human rights related organizations will be an asset.

Language Requirements:

Fluent in Spanish and English, with proven drafting ability.  English to be tested through TOEFL (minimum 500 points).
