To respond to an identified gap in availability of timely strategic information on the HIV epidemic and its response in Latin America, efforts have been directed in recent years to promoting the generation of high quality strategic information in the region by conducting HIV estimations and projections processes, national AIDS spending exercises, population size estimate studies in key populations, modes of transmission and other special studies.
Countries have submitted the most recent strategic information available to UNAIDS, WHO and UNICEF on 31 March 2010 for reporting on UNGASS Country Progress and on 31 March 2011 for reporting on the “Progress in Scaling Up the Health Sector Response to HIV/AIDS Towards Universal Access.
The UNGASS reporting process, which responds to the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS adopted in 2001 by the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on AIDS, has contributed during the last four reporting cycles (2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010), have resulted in an incomparable evidence base on the HIV epidemic and response. However, the analysis, use, and dissemination of available strategic information to inform decision-making and guide effective national responses to the epidemic have been found to be limited in the region. Greater systematic availability of HIV information for all working in HIV in the region is needed.
